CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Sam Fayed’s work synthesizes disparate methodologies of early cinema production with contemporary pop-culture imagery using mixed-media collages, digital, and optical photo compositing techniques. His work results in ironic twists and sarcastic turns of visual puns. He is a polymath; a caster of visual spells. His recent works spawn fables from found vintage 35mm prints. In the studio, he wet-mounts scans to preserve their pristine, optical resolution and restores old prints, many of which are found vacation or family photos—moments of strangers’ lives. His work speaks to incertitudes, to implicit messaging of advertising imagery, politics, and foreignness. Fayed plies his craft with the tools and messaging formulas of recognizable, mass urban culture, and media industry products. He strips quotidian objects of their meaning, captures them on film and draws vectors between current political polemics and the effect of technology on social constructs. His work speaks to the loss of individuality and cultural reawakening.
